Nokia has unveiled the Nokia N82 in stylish black.

ThN82 enables people to "geotag" the images they capture - allowing them to not only be saved by date, but by location as well. This adds to a line-up of photography features, including a 5 megapixel camera, Carl Zeiss optics and a Xenon flash and advanced connectivity features that makes it easy for consumers to share their discoveries, journeys and locations.

The Nokia N82 in black is expected to start shipping within weeks, with an estimated retail price of approximately 400 euros, before taxes and subsidies.

Telcos to pay Rs 5-20K fine for every unwanted call

Finally, there’s help at hand. Your mobile operator will be held accountable every time you receive an unwanted call from a telemarketer. Sector regulator TRAI on Monday notified that service providers will be subjected to a fine of Rs 5,000 for the first unsolicited commercial call made to a Do-Not-Call-registered subscriber, and Rs 20,000 for every subsequent call. All that the subscriber has to do is to inform his service provider within 15 days of the call.

Justifying the move to impose stiff penalties on telecom operators over their failure to rein in unsolicited telemarketing calls, the regulator said, “There have been a number of consumer complaints to the authority about telemarketing calls.

Financial sanctions, as an effective deterrent to non-compliance of the regulations, has become a necessity. The objective (of these penalties) is to increase the effectiveness of the regulations by providing some financial sanctions to non-compliant telecom service providers and reduce the nuisance and inconvenience caused to mobile phone subscribers.’’

Sources said that mobile phone companies are likely to challenge the TRAI directive. While no operator wanted to comment officially, sources said the operators are likely to point out that most of the unsolicited calls were being made by the 15,000 plus unregistered telemarketers and that they had no control over them.
TRAI also directed that telemarketers be fined Rs 500 for the first unsolicited commercial communication they make to a DNC-registered subscriber and added that the fine amount would be increased to Rs 1,000 for every subsequent call.

The Do-Not-Call service was introduced last year by the TRAI for those mobile subscribers who did not want telemarketers to disturb them with calls on house loans, credit cards, insurance and other services. So far, it has been a non-starter as even DNC-registered subscribers continue to be troubled by telemarketers.

The regulator also said that it was forced to impose steep penalties as the issue of increasing telemarketing calls had caught the attention of Parliament, the Supreme Court of India, the Court of Delhi, the Reserve Bank of India and the State Commission (Consumer) of Delhi.

However, it must also be pointed out that only a small section of India’s 250 million mobile subscribers has opted to sign up for Do-Not-Call registry. So far, only 8.3 million phone users have registered for the service. - a far cry from the initial prediction of 50-00 million cellular users likely to sign up immediately to get relief from pesky telemarketers.

Beyond the metros, there are hardly any takers for the DNC. Even in the metros, which have a combined cellular base of over 50 million, only a small percent of subscribers have signed up.

According to TRAI data, about 13,600 telemarketers have got themselves registered with the DoT. The NDNC is being accessed daily by around 600 tele-marketers for scrubbing their calling list. Out of approximately 1,522 million numbers uploaded by the telemarketers for scrubbing, 1,411 million numbers were cleared by NDNC for calling, TRAI added.

Penalise Tata Indicom for bad service

We all know that Customer is the king. And to make him happy, companies go to any extent so that they be loyal to them. In a similar move, Tata Teleservices aka Tata Indicom has announced that quality satisfaction will be guaranteed and if it happens to be below the set standards, they will offer a voluntary penalty.

Anil Sardana, MD of Tata Tele said that “We will come out with a customer chart setting more stringent quality norms compared to telecom regulator TRAI and if we fail to comply with those standards we are ready to pay penalty to our subscribers.”

We are not sure of what type of penalty they are talking about but we would want other operators too to follow the suit. After all, customer service is the only thing which distinguishes them with the competitors.

Airtel slashes call charges

Bharti Airtel has raised the battle pitch for the pre-paid mobile market by slashing airtime tariff to 50 paise a minute for its Delhi subscribers.

The reduced tariff will be available for all mobile-to-mobile local calls. Pre-paid subscribers can avail themselves of the new scheme by buying a recharge coupon worth Rs 56 every month.

The move comes after the Tata-Virgin combine raised the bar by launching mobile schemes for the youth segment offering airtime at 50 paise a minute.

Most of the other mobile operators are charging Re One per minute on their pre-paid cards.

Mr Shashi Arora, CEO - Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Mobile Services), Delhi & NCR said, “We at Airtel have always been at the forefront in introducing best in class products and services for our consumers. This latest endeavour is towards making tariffs more affordable and within the reach of all income groups. We are sure our customers would find this opportunity very cost effective.”

However, the Virgin Mobile offer seems to be still more attractive as it allows subscribers to call fixed line users also at 50 paise a minute, besides getting paid for incoming calls.

The Airtel offer is limited to mobile-to-mobile calls. The other difference is that while the Airtel offer does not give any talk time with the Rs 56 voucher, Virgin has a recharge coupon for Rs 50 with a talk time worth Rs 39.
Tata Tele claim

“Virgin Mobile branded services offer the best value for money for youth who call and text a lot. The way we do this is by rewarding them both for making outgoing and receiving incoming calls. Customers who make a lot of calls, will benefit from our 50 paise to any local network offer. Many third party experts agree that we offer great value for money.

For example, in a report released by Morgan Stanley earlier this month, they found that customers who made 140 minutes of outgoing calls could save up to 25-30 per cent if they used Virgin Mobile,” said a Tata Teleservices spokesperson.

More than 70 per cent of the 200 million mobile subscribers use pre-paid cards and they tend to change operators.

Lifetime validity cards were launched just over a year ago by all the mobile operators in a bid to arrest the high churn rate, which is around 4 per cent

However, with new operators set to enter the fray more tariff cuts can be expected in the coming months.

No ban on Blackberry: Govt.

Amid the raging controversy over Blackberry operations by mobile service providers, the government on Friday ruled out banning the service but said security aspects would be looked into.
"We will discuss the issue with the Telecom Commission... the country's security is of paramount importance," Telecom Minister A Raja told reporters on sidelines of a function.
The government is in discussion with the cellular operators like Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Essar and Reliance Communications and the issue would be resolved soon.
Telecom Secretary Siddartha Behura said, "We are keen to resolve the issue at the earliest but there is no question of banning the Blackberry services."

The issue of Blackberry services came to light after Tata Teleservices denied permission by the Ministry of Home Affairs to launch services due to security concerns.
Tatas had claimed that each value added service like Blackberry service has be approved by the government before it was offered to subscribers.
Even the state-owned BSNL is also in the process to launch Blackberry service provided regulatory issues were resolved, BSNL director (Finance) S D Saxena said.
Developed by Canadian firm Research In Motion (RIM), Blackberry is a patented service that allows access to e-mails on mobile phones just like SMS on conventional mobile phones.
"We are ready to launch the Blackberry service provided the regulatory issues are resolved. If the issues are resolved now, then we can launch our service in one month," Saxena said.
Currently, a number of telecom operators, including Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Reliance Communications are currently offering Blackberry services to their users.
On the issue of spectrum, the Minister said spectrum issues are expected to be resolved soon to the satisfaction and fairness of all concerned.
"We will roll out the spectrum during the regime of this UPA government," he added.

As a part of its new brand positioning exercise that is aimed at doubling its market share, Samsung Telecommunications India (STI) has roped in film actor Aamir Khan to endorse its mobile phones.

The company has announced a new tagline -"Next is What?" being used in all its communication material along with the launch of five new models of mobile phones.

"With Aamir Khan as our brand ambassador, our strong, differentiated product line-up and our enhanced distribution reach, I am confident that we should be in a position to double our market share in India this year," Samsung South West Asia Headquarters President and CEO H B Lee said in a statement.

Samsung, which already has two distributors in India, has strengthened its network by appointing two more distributors for sales in the Western and Eastern part.

The new handset range launched targets consumers across the multimedia (imaging and music), business lifestyle and popular segments.

Spice to launch mobile for $20 (Rs. 800)

Indian telecom company Spice Corp Ltd (SCL) has unveiled a no-frills mobile phone that will retail at about Rs 800 ($20) early April, the company's chairman said.

"Though we have taken various measures to reduce the cost price for the end user, it will be a technologically advanced instrument," claimed SCL Chairman BK Modi.

He said this product will prove that India is not only equipped to give the best of technology but even the cheapest at most competitive prices. Also, he didn't rule out the possibility of prices of such phones going down further.

The new voice-only phone was exhibited at a global expo in Barcelona in Spain Monday and evoked tremendous interest among mobile service providers from around the world, Modi said.

The phone does not offer a screen but will provide excellent voice clarity. An audio programme would announce the digits that are dialled to prevent errors. A Braille version will also be simultaneously introduced to benefit visually challenged users.

"Spice got nearly 40 MSPs inquiring about it at the expo itself. We have tied up with one Indian MSP to provide the phone as a package deal."

The service provider's name will be announced along with the phone launch in April this year.

Designed in India by Spice Corp Ltd, the new phone is being manufactured in China in partnership with Spice's Chinese partner.

Available in a range of attractive colours and compact and lightweight design, the phone will be compatible with all types of SIM cards currently available in the market and function on most connection types.

Within a year of launch, Modi was confident of selling between five to 10 million pieces. "Initially, we are targeting the entire Middle East, SAARC and ASEAN group of countries. Then we shall explore other markets."

He said that presently there is only 20 percent mobile penetration in India. "The remaining population has never set eyes on a mobile phone."

Worldwide, cheap mobile phones make up for nearly 20 percent of the total market. But more than half the world's population has never used a phone, so the demand potential is immense, Modi said.

The $1-billion Bombay Stock Exchange-listed SCL is an upcoming telecom company currently operating in two telecom circles – Karnataka and Punjab – and has applied for licences in other circles.

Motorola W230: Value for money

It’s great to see mobile phone manufacturers incorporating multiple features into low-end handsets targeted at the entry-level segment. The Motoyuva W230 is a slight upgrade from the previous Motoyuva that was simply a basic radio mobile. The new version promises to be a step ahead by incorporating an MP3 player. But does it deliver? Here are my findings on the W230.

Design
I rather liked the candybar design of the W230; it’s ergonomic and lightweight. Unlike some other basic models, the W230 doesn’t have an often-hard-to-use rubberized keypad. It has a 2.5mm earphone socket on one side and the miniUSB charging / PC docking port on the other. The speakers are on the top. The 1.3 inch CSTN display has a resolution of 128 x 128 pixels and 65k colors.

The W230 sits comfortably in your hand. I liked the design from all angles except for the fact that it lacks a hot-swap slot for the microSD card. Of course if you do buy a 1GB microSD card it’s not like you’ll be removing it often, but it helps to have an easier facility, doesn’t it?

Features and Performance
The W230 is a simple phone, so it doesn’t offer any extravagant features. However, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t try to deliver. From the Media point of view the W230 seems VFM. The FM radio is easy to use and has superb reception, even while commuting inside the train. It includes auto scanning and setting presets.

Sadly, it didn’t seem to be able to save the channels correctly and ended up saving the same channels twice. You might as well set the frequency, fine-tune it, and save the presets yourself by holding down a number key on the keypad that will correspond to the channel preset. It’s a cinch. There's also a recording feature for the radio.

If you’ve been complaining about your cellphone dying on you (or for that matter your laptop, portable gaming console, whatever), keep your shirt on, for a solution is at hand. Geniuses at Stanford have developed a technology that will allow your normal Lithium-Ion battery to last up to ten times its normal lifespan.

Yi Cui, assistant professor of materials science and engineering at Stanford, is the team leader in this endeavor. If you're wondering how a Lithium-Ion battery works, here’s a quick lowdown: Lithium-Ion batteries store ions on their anodes. The electrical storage capacity of a Li-ion battery is limited by how much lithium can be held in the battery's anode, which is typically made of carbon. What Cui has done is to replace carbon with silicon (don’t get the wrong idea, not the Pam Anderson kind; we mean the microchip kind).

Silicon can hold more charge than carbon. The problem is that silicon expands as it absorbs positively charged lithium atoms during charging, and shrinks during use (such as when playing your iPod) as the lithium is drawn out of the silicon. This causes immense wear and tear on the battery and can lead to an early burnout. You will no doubt remember the BL-5C battery scare, where this particular model expanded so much that it tended to pop out of the battery compartment. I’m sure we don’t want that experience again – but neither do we want to compromise on the longevity of our batteries.

The new batteries that Cui is aiming to develop will have Lithium stored in a cluster of silicon nanowires. These wires have the capacity to expand up to four times their normal size when they absorb the Lithium and each of these nanowires has a diameter one-thousandth the thickness of a sheet of paper. I can’t even imagine anything that small. The good thing is that with a system fashioned in this manner the silicon will have a much longer life.

"It’s not a small improvement; it’s a revolutionary development," claims Yi Cui, and I couldn’t agree more. Who wouldn’t want a battery that can give you an average of 30-40 hours of running time on a single charge? Even though Cui has filed a patent for this remarkable technology, it may be a while before you can have it in your mobile phone. Methinks it’s definitely worth the wait.

It may not be cheap, but as the guys from IntoMobile so eloquently put it: "Who wouldn’t pay a couple more bucks for a tenfold increase in battery life?" I know I would.

Airtel on Tuesday announced the launch of a whole new range of M-Commerce solutions such as Mobile Money Transfer (MMT), Postpaid Bill Payment and Prepaid Recharge on the mobile phone. For these services it has partnered with ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, SBI, Corporation Bank and VISA to enable payments. Debit card holders in all SBI associate banks, like State Bank of Mysore, will also be a part of the deal. The solution has been developed by mChek, a provider of mobile security and payment solutions. Customers can get started by simply sending a text message “Airtel” to 543219.

Airtel has extensively piloted these products across the country and already has 67,000 registered customers for postpaid bill payments with over a hundred thousand transactions running into several crores, said a company release. What’s in store? Mobile Money Transfer: Customers who have a VISA credit or debit card of ICICI, HDFC, or Corporation Bank can now send money to their family and friends provided they have a VISA card at the other end. In addition SBI customers will be able to transfer money from one SBI account to another SBI account or to any VISA debit/credit card in the country. Postpaid Bill Payment: The service allows an Airtel postpaid customer to pay their or friends’postpaid bill without going to a physical outlet. Prepaid Recharge: Here the service allows any Airtel prepaid customer to recharge their card without visiting a retail store.

How it works:
To avail any of the above applications, all Airtel mobile customers with compatible handsets need to download the application. The download procedure includes verification of the card details of the applicant. The transaction process is extremely secure with a special bank authenticated system, claimed Airtel. This new offering eliminates the need for carrying cash for Money Transfer, making postpaid bill payments and prepaid recharging.
